UN Women, «Advancing Gender-Responsive Synergies across the Rio Conventions. Gender Equality at the Intersection of Climate Action, Biodiversity Protection and Sustainable Land Management», November 2024.

This paper identifies and proposes gender-responsive synergies between the three so-called Rio Conventions, i.e. the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Already Chapter 24 of the Agenda 21 (1992) calls for «Global Action for Women Towards Sustainable and Equitable Development» and §§ 246-285 of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995) contains nine strategic objectives focused on women and the environment. Furthermore, Gender Plans of Action have been adopted between 2008 and 2017 for the UNCBD, the UNCDD and the UNFCCC. For the UNCDD, a Gender Equality Policy and Plan 2024 to 2030 has also been adopted in 2024.
